Alumni Service Award: 2019 David R. Peters ’65

David R. Peters ’65 served several churches in West Virginia with his last church appointment at Grace UMC, Keyser, from 1980-1991. In 1991,

Rev. Peters was appointed the fourth President/CEO of the United Methodist Foundation of V, Inc. in Charleston, WV, where he served for 17 years. During his tenure at the UM Foundation the assets under management grew from $5.5 million to over $50 million, with nearly 10% of those funds as permanent endowment for Wesleyan. In preparing for the UM Foundation ministry, he earned a certificate in Planned Giving in 1992 from The College of William and Mary. Rev.

Peters earned a master of divinity degree from The Divinity School of Duke University, and graduated from Wesleyan in 1965. While at Wesleyan, he was the President of Sigma Theta Epsilon and in Omicron Delta Kappa. He taught for Fairmont State Colege, Mount de Chantal Visitation Academy in Wheeling, and Potomac State College of WV in Keyser. He served a two-year term as President of the Duke University Divinity School’s National Alumni Council and served on the Board of Trustees at Wesleyan from 2006-2010 before becoming Wesleyan’s part-time Coordinator of Planned Giving until 2018. He also is a Paul Harris Fellow of the Charleston Rotary Club.

Rev. Peters and his wife Harriet reside in Hurricane, WV. They have two married sons, D. Scott Peters ’91 and Benjamin A Peters, and four grandchildren.
