Stella Lazelle Barnhart did not go to school here, but her pastor Amos Thornburg (Class of 1921; Honorary, 1939) did. She told him that she wanted to leave her estate to a Methodist institution, and made arrangements in her will to do just that. She was delighted to be able to do so in honor of her father, James McLain Lazelle, MD who had been a physician in Fairmont, WV from 1857-1885. He organized the West Virginia State Medical Association and was president in 1872.
In addition to Stella Lazelle Barnhart’s gift, funds for this building included grants from:
- The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation
- Corning Glass Works Foundation
- Gulf Oil Foundation
- PPG Industries Foundation
- Appalachian Regional Commission
- Department of Health, Education and Welfare
- Higher Education Facilities Act of 1965
