- Ordained a Methodist minister and served as pastor of the Emmanuel Church at Mansfield, Massachusetts, and the St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Providence, Rhode Island
- He was 31 years old when he became the president of the West Virginia Conference Seminary. His salary was $1,200 and his wife, Ruth, was also employed to teach music.
- In the spring of 1892, President Hutchinson, at his own expense, erected a residence on campus near the Oak Grove. The Board of Trustees agreed to purchase the dwelling if his relationship with the college should terminate in any way.
