College Histories

These are the major published histories of West Virginia Wesleyan College.

Haught, T.W. (1940) West Virginia Wesleyan College: First Fifty Years: 1890-1940. West Virginia Wesleyan College: Buckhannon, WV.

Haught, T.W. (1960) West Virginia Wesleyan College: The Sixth Decade: 1940-1950West Virginia Wesleyan College: Buckhannon, WV.

Thomas W. Haught was heavily involved with the school for the first sixty years, and represented a great deal of institutional memory (student, faculty, Dean, Acting-President three times). Fortunately for all who would follow, he had a keen sense of the importance of this and recorded it in great detail.

Plummer, K.M. (1965) A history of West Virginia Wesleyan College 1890-1965.  West Virginia Wesleyan College: Buckhannon, WV.

Kenneth M. Plummer came to West Virginia Wesleyan in 1959. He taught Bible and Religion from 1959-1966, was Professor of History from 1966-1978, and was the Dean of the College from 1971-1973. His writing is less from personal knowledge of events and more focused on research and administrative perspective. This book was published just as President Stanley Martin was in the process of realizing his dreams for the future of the college.

Miller, B.T. (2014) Our Home Among the Hills: West Virginia Wesleyan College’s First 125 Years. Virginia Beach, VA: The Donning Company Publishers.

Brett Miller graduated from WVWC in 2006. He was the Circulation Supervisor at the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library from 2007-2011. After earning his M.L.I.S. at the University of Pittsburgh in 2011 he was named College Archivist and served in that capacity until 2021. Other duties included: Music Librarian (2011-2016), Coordinator of Records Management (2011-1017), and Coordinator of the Emeritus Club (2016-2017). From 2017-2021 he served as the Director of Library Services and Archivist. This book is rich with photographs and is a very readable history of the college.
