S. Clifton Ives was born in Farmington, Maine and is currently the Resident Bishop of the West Virginia area of The United Methodist Church.

The son of a United Methodist pastor, Bishop Ives attended the University of Maine, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He attended Boston University School of Theology completing the Master of Divinity in 1963 and the Doctor of Ministry in 1983.

Bishop Ives served local churches in Maine from 1961 to 1986. He served as a District Superintendent from 1986 until 1992. He has been a delegate to both General and Jurisdictional Conferences of the United Methodist Church (1972-1992). At the 1992 Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference, he was elected a bishop and assigned to the West Virginia area. He is currently serving as president of The General Board of Church and Society. He has served as president of the General Commission on Religion and Race and has chaired the Council of Bishops Task Force on Racism. Bishop Ives has served for twelve years as a member of the West Virginia Wesleyan College Board of Trustees.

Bishop Ives is married to the former Jane Petherbridge. They are the parents of three children: Bonnie Ives Marden, Stephen Clifton and Jonathan Andrew.
