Dunn Hall

Built in 2010, this dorm was opened in August of 2011. Like many buildings before it, the name of New Hall was used initially. On October 12, 2012 it was officially named Dunn Hall.  This dorm added 140 beds for students, and included 4-person suite-style living as well as single rooms with bathrooms and kitchenettes. Social lounges were provided on each floor as well as three large study lounges and laundry and vending areas.

The building is named Dunn Hall in honor of Thomas B. Dunn (Class of 1964) and Carol J. Campbell Dunn (Class of 1963) and their family, which has been very supportive of the school. Tom was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1984-1990 and again from 2000-2008.

(2011) “New” Hall Ready for Residency Next Semester, by Stephanie Wright. [Pharos 2011-02-08, p.1] “New Hall”, as the faculty of WVWC is calling it, is scheduled to be completed and ready for residency by August 1st of this year. The 5.5 million dollar dorm is located on Camden Avenue, and is presently nameless. Naming rights will cost fifty percent of the total cost of the building and construction. ~ According to Alisa Lively, the new dorm rooms will all be suite style, including a double room on each side (conversion to singles possible) with a bathroom equipped with two sinks, a shower, and toilet in the middle. “Each room is set up so that each student almost has a single,” Lively offered. The dorms will be coed according to suite, and the students able to obtain residency include both freshman and upper-classmen. Other perks will include controllable air conditioning and heat designated to each suite, and all night study lounges located on each floor. The suites will cost the same as Fleming Hall does now, $3,015 a semester. ~ As for parking, Lively states that the spaces behind the Camden Apartments will be sufficient for the new dorm as well: “The amount of parking behind Camden, next to “New” Hall will cover needed parking spaces. Espeically with the far back lot and the gravel closer to the CDC.” ~ Wi-Fi will be accessible throughout the new dorm, as will the entire campus by the beginning of next year. The college will begin the conversion with Fleming Hall later this semester.

(2012) Unveiling of Dunn Hall, by Justin Heinauer [Pharos 2012-11-15, p.6] If you’ve been walking around New Hall lately, you may have felt like something was just different about the place. It could be because the building itself is actually undergoing many changes. ~ First of all, New Hall has finally been named. As of Saturday, October 20, the building’s name was offically dubbed “Dunn Hall,” thanks to the generous donation made by donor Carol Dunn. ~ Aside from the building’s new name, let’s talk about the lobby. As you walk in the front door and look to your left, “bam!” A brand new ping-pong table with brand new paddles awaits you, just begging to  be played. This ping-pong table is always in use, and the competition is always intense and entertaining as you pass through the lobby. Dunn Hall Resident Assistant Jack Waldon throroughly enjoys this new addition. ~ “I held a ping-pong program for my residents not long ago,” Waldon said. “The loggy was jam-packed, and at one point we had an unrelentless duel going on. Believe it or not, ping-pong can be a very serious game!” ~ More of Dunn Hall’s newest additions include the artwork featured in both the study lounges and on the lobby walls. Local architect Bryson VanNostrand, the man who built the residence hall itself, donated the artwork found in the study lounges. The artwork in the lobby is a feature from Matt Jablonski, a 2011 Wesleyan alumnus. Both men are very skilled in their work, and if the chance arises for you to look at these artworks, go for it! You won’t be sorry you did. The new changes to dunn Hall make the building feel relaxing and welcoming. Students will surely refer to these changes for years. to come. Photo with caption: It was out with the “New” and in with the “Dunn” when letters were placed upon the building.
