Rae Emrick, assistant professor, director of the School of Exercise Science & Athletic Training, and associate athletic director at West Virginia Wesleyan College, was awarded the General Board of Higher Education of the United Methodist Exemplary Teaching Award at the school’s Founders Day Convocation on Friday, October 13 during Homecoming weekend.
The award recognizes faculty members who exemplify excellence in teaching, civility and concern for students and colleagues, commitment to value-centered education, and service to students, the institution, and the community.
“Professor Emrick words hard to measure student learning, and this understanding has led to excellent teaching over the last thirteen years,” stated Dr. Boyd Creasman, provost and vice president for academics. “Students describe her classes as insightful, helpful, challenging, and fun. She is praised for always being available to answer questions outside of class.
“She wears many hats with grace and style,” he added.
Emrick received a bachelor of science in sports medicine from Wesleyan in 1995, a master of science in health and physical education with a concentration in athletic training from Marshall University in 1997, and is currently working on a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from West Virginia University.
A member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the West Virginia Athletic Trainers Association, Emrick worked as an athletic trainer for the American Rehabilitation Group before returning to her alma mater to serve in multiple capacities. She has worked as an assistant athletic trainer, clinical instructor, ATEP coordinator of clinical education, and associate athletic trainer prior to serving in her current roles.
Emrick has served as a speaker for the WVASFA, the Upshur County School system, and the WVAHPERD. She was awarded the WVATA Athletic Training Educator of the Year in 2007.
