Honorary Degree (1994) Eileen Catterson

Raised in New York City, Eileen Catterson went to high school in Brooklyn, then to nursing school in Virginia to become a Registered Nurse in 1958. A Roman Catholic sister, a member of the Daughters of Wisdom order, she was sent to Malawi, Africa, in the mid-1960s for five years to serve as a missionary nurse and to manage an orphanage. Her experience there convinced her she could accomplish more as a doctor. She attended the Medical College of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia, and at age 39 completed her medical degree. After a residency in Ohio, she moved to Wyoming County, West Virginia, in 1977 to serve an economically depressed area. At the Pineville Children’s Clinic, in a town of 2,500, she is the only pediatrician within 40 miles. Currently president of the West Virginia Board of Medicine, she is a candidate for a master’s degree in applied theology from Wheeling Jesuit College.
